The Etobicoke Humane Society offers cold weather pet safety tips to animals owners for the winter season.

Short haired dogs, puppies, and cats should only be outside for short periods of time because they are more vulnerable to the cold, which may result in frostbite or hypothermia.

The humane society also cautions leaving a pet alone in a vehicle because the car holds in the cold and may cause your animal to freeze to death.

During the cold weather, cats tend to look for warm places like under a hood of a car. To avoid hurting the animal always honk or check before driving.

Outdoor dogs need to have a warm shelter, a fresh supply of water, and may even need extra calories during the cold weather.

After a walk or being outside dry off the pets paws to protect them from road salt and freezing.

The humane society also cautions to keep your pet on a leash when outside, as they may lose their sense of direction in bad weather conditions.
