The provincial Special Investigations Unit has cleared a York Regional Police officer of any wrongdoing in connection with the shooting of a man who allegedly drove at him in Scarborough earlier this year.
The incident occurred at Kingston Road and West Hill Drive at about 11 a.m. May 20 when York officers tried to arrest a 22-year-old man for breaching the conditions of his release from custody.
The SIU said officers had the man under surveillance and followed him from a home in Ajax to the intersection.
A cyclist rode up to the driver's side of the man's vehicle at the intersection and started talking to him. A short time later, three officers in unmarked cars tries to box in the vehicle.
"The cyclist fled on foot and was pursued and arrested by two of the officers," the SIU said in a news release.
The third officer fired a shot as the man in the vehicle drove forward.
The man suffered a non-life-threatening chest wound.
The SIU examined video surveillance from a nearby business as part of the investigation.
